Zazoo's voice is honest and distinct as she tells her story the secondary characters develop with real three-dimensional complexity as well. "A slow and almost dreamlike exploration of the myriad ways that the past-especially a cataclysmic past-informs the present. The slow revelation of the many intertwined personal histories is truly elegant, and the several love stories that emerge are almost painfully romantic. Then one misty October morning, a young man on a bicycle rides into Zazoo's small village and asks a question from which many stories begin to unfold. She has lived with her adoptive Grand-Pierre in France in an old stone mill between the river and the canal since she was two, sharing poetry, adventures, and the predictable rhythms of the seasons. "Zazoo is Vietnamese by birth but feels entirely French. She also has a little romance with a French boy named Marius. It was fun listening to this story of how a little adopted Vietnamese girl is adopted by a single American man and, as he ages, brings affection to him and to his neighborhood pharmicist, Uncle Felix Kline. There's interesting dialogue with other characters as well. The story is told in the voice of the main character, a young Vietnamese girl, named Zazoo. Rahim and Javan have a scuffle, and duplicitous affairs in the castle end up making Javan look guilty. Basically, a devious distant relative (Rahim) takes the place of returning son, Javan Samad Najafai who has been away at school for a decade. The Traitor Prince is a book that sucks you in from the beginning and doesn’t let go until the very end. Basically, I was reading it simply because I trusted the author. I wasn’t sure what Prince was retelling, and the premise didn’t hook me at first. Why? Actually, I was eyeing the Cinderella-retelling fourth novel in the series but felt compelled to read the books in order. So after I finished The Wish Granter, I bought the third in the series, The Traitor Prince. I didn’t want to read another retelling, and I thought the novel would be a disappointment after the fabulous first entry in the series. Weeks later looking at it on my “to read” pile, I regretted it. I was so impressed by The Shadow Queen that I bought the next book in the Ravenspire series, The Wish Granter. When I read the description, I thought I would hate The Shadow Queen because I’m not fond of Snow White being depicted as a warrior princess. Redwine’s first novel, The Shadow Queen, as part of a goal I set for myself for “Tell a Fairy Tale Day.” I was going to read several Snow White retellings and review them. A woman is sexually obsessed with the human heart a lost, rotting baby crawls out of a backyard and into a bedroom a pair of teenage girls can’t let go of their idol an entire neighborhood is cursed to death when it fails to respond correctly to a moral dilemma. The stories in her new collection are as terrifying as they are socially conscious, and press into being the unspoken-fetish, illness, the female body, the darkness of human history-with bracing urgency. Populated by unruly teenagers, crooked witches, homeless ghosts, and hungry women, they walk the uneasy line between urban realism and horror. Mariana Enriquez has been critically lauded for her unconventional and sociopolitical stories of the macabre. G'ma tells Scoob that she took a road trip with Jimmy in 1968 and the Green Book told them where they could safely stop throughout the South as an interracial couple without risk of harassment. Inside are some maps, photographs of Scoob's grandfather Jimmy, and a book called the Travelers Green Book. After lunch, Scoob and G'ma visit a state park, where G'ma shows Scoob the box where she keeps important belongings. As he talks, Scoob notices he is attracting disdainful stares from the other diners, and he assumes this is because he is a black boy eating with his white grandmother. At the restaurant, Scoob tells G'ma about a fight he got into at school because a bully was picking on his friend Shenice's brother. They begin their trip by crossing the Georgia border into Alabama where they stop for lunch. Scoob has recently gotten in trouble at school and been grounded by his father, James, so he is particularly anxious to get away. She tells him she has just sold her house to buy the vehicle and she invites him on a road trip. The novel opens with the 11-year-old protagonist William “Scoob” Lamar being picked up by his grandmother, whom he calls “G'ma,” in an RV. New York: Crown Books for Young Readers, 2020. The following version of this book was used to create this study guide: Stone, Nic. The valley was no innocent place of country idylls and Laurie Lee compares their toughness to that of inner city London lads. (A good parallel may be drawn with the book of 'British Fairy Tales', as recorded by Alan Garner, captured from the same era.) Disease and hunger were no stranger, big families were common, and children often died young. The people were wild and superstitious, half Celtic and half Christian. The village was poor, self-sufficient, and still rather feudal. He lived in the beauty of a small Cotswold valley until he was twenty, his impressions also incidentally capture the final years of a deeply rural way of English life, now thoroughly gone. Like many a good literary biography, it reads quite like a novel, but records the early life of Laurie Lee who grew up in the years after the First World War. 'Cider With Rosie' by Laurie Lee (1914-1997) has been a favourite set text in English lessons in Britain since it was published in 1959. But for what purpose?
